Unsupervised texture segmentation/classification using 2-D autoregressive modeling and the stochastic expectation-maximization algorithm

چکیده
The problem of textured image segmentation upon an unsupervised scheme is addressed. In the past two decades, there has been much interest in segmenting images involving complex random or structural texture patterns. However, most unsupervised segmentation techniques generally suffer from the lack of information about the correct number of texture classes. Therefore, this number is often assumed known or given a priori. On the basis of the Stochastic Expectation-Maximization (SEM) algorithm, we try to perform a reliable segmentation without such prior information, starting from an upper bound for the number of texture classes. At a low resolution level, the image model assumes an autoregressive (AR) structure for the class-conditional random field. The SEM procedure is then applied to the set of AR features, yielding an estimate of the true number of texture classes, as well as estimates of the class-conditional AR parameters, and a coarse pre-segmentation. In a final stage, a regularization process is introduced for region formation by the way of a simple pairwise interaction model, and a finer segmentation is obtained through the maximization of posterior marginals. Some experimental results obtained by applying this method to synthetic textured and remote sensing images are presented. We also provide a comparison of our approach with some previously published methods using the same textured image database.

متن کاملMean Field Decomposition of A Posteriori Probability for MRF-Based Image Segmentation: Unsupervised Multispectral Textured Image Segmentation
This paper proposes a Markov random field (MRF) model-based method for unsupervised segmentation of multispectral images consisting of multiple textures. To model such textured images, a hierarchical MRF is used with two layers, the first layer representing an unobservable region image and the second layer representing multiple textures which cover each region. This method uses the Expectation ...
متن کاملMixture Models and the Segmentation of Multimodal Textures
A problem of using mixture-of-Gaussian models for unsupervised texture segmentation is that “multimodal” textures (such as can often be encountered in natural images) cannot be well represented by a single Gaussian cluster. We propose a divide-andconquer method that groups together Gaussian clusters (estimated via Expectation Maximization) into homogeneous texture classes. This method allows to...
متن کاملSegmentation of monochrome and color textures using moving average modeling approach
The segmentation of textures using features extracted with 2-D moving average (MA) modeling approach is presented in this paper. The 2-D MA model represents a texture as an output of a 2-D nite impulse response (FIR) lter with simple input process. The 2-D MA model is exible, and can be used for modeling both isotropic and anisotropic textures. The maximum-likelihood (ML) estimators of the 2-D ...
